Professor Jian Kang has been Professor of Acoustics at the University of Sheffield School of Architecture since 2003. He obtained his first degree and MSc from Tsinghua University in Beijing, and his PhD from the University of Cambridge. Before coming to Sheffield, he worked as a Senior Research Associate at the Martin Centre, University of Cambridge, an A. v. Humboldt Fellow at the Fraunhofer Institute of Building Physics in Germany, and a lecturer at Tsinghua University.
Professor Kang's research field is architectural/environmental acoustics and noise control. His specialist areas include computer simulation of room acoustics and environmental acoustics, auralisation, urban soundscape and acoustic comfort, social and psychological aspects of sounds, acoustic environments for hearing impaired individuals, speech intelligibility, acoustic physical scale modelling, acoustics of long spaces (such as underground stations and urban streets), sound absorption (especially with non-fibrous materials), sound insulation (especially at low frequencies), acoustic properties of vegetation and green roofs, acoustic windows for natural ventilation, auditorium and recording studio design, industrial and environmental noise prediction and control, and large scale noise mapping.
He has published 3 books, over 200 refereed journal papers and book chapters, and over 400 conference papers and technical reports. He has been the principal investigator for over 60 research projects funded by EPSRC, AHRC, Royal Society, British Academy, British Council, DTI, Nuffield Foundation, Hong Kong TDG, China NSF, Acoustical Society of America, German AvH, industry, etc.; and has been a consultant for over 60 major acoustics and noise control projects in the UK, Germany, Hong Kong and China. In particular, his world-leading work on acoustic theories, design guidance and products has brought major improvements to the noise control in underground stations/tunnels and soundscape design in urban areas.
A charted engineer (CEng); a Fellow of the UK Institute of Acoustics (IOA) [Council Member and Management Committee of Building Acoustics Group]; a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) [Member of Technical Committee on Noise and Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics]; a member of several other professional bodies, including Deutsche Gesellschaft für Akustik (DEGA) (Germany), Acoustical Society of China, and International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV); an EPSRC College Member; a Chang-Jiang Chair Visiting Professor for the Chinese Ministry of Education; and a Distinguished Overseas Advisor for the Chinese Academy of Sciences - Professor Kang has acted as a frequent reviewer for major acoustic journals, building science journals, and research proposals. He is the Editor in Environmental Noise for Acta Acustica united with Acustica - European Journal of Acoustics. He is currently the chair of the WUN (Worldwide Universities Network) Environmental Acoustics Network, the chair of the EU funded COST Network on Soundscape of European Cities and Landscapes, the joint chair of the EPSRC funded NoiseFutures network, and the Chair of the Technical Committee on Noise of the European Acoustics Association (EAA). He has won numerous academic awards, including the IOA Tyndall Medal, and ASA Newman Medal.
Professor Kang teaches building science, particularly architectural and environmental acoustics, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is the School's Director of Research, Director of International Development, and also sits in a number of University committees.
